Please note these "Fast Facts" refer to the 16th Annual 'For the Love of Literacy Conference' which was held on April 9, 2011 at Notre Dame Secondary School, Burlington, Ontario.

CONFERENCE FAST FACTS

  • Supports the belief that children’s literacy development is best met through a shared enjoyment, informed modelling and developmentally appropriate instruction.
  • Designed to interest parents, teachers, librarians, early childhood educators, educational assistants and community volunteers
  • 16th annual conference
  • Average yearly attendance: 300-400. In 2011 – 335 participants attended the Conference
  • The organizing committee represents the following regional public institutions: Halton District School Board, Halton Catholic District School Board, The Ontario Early Years Centres, The Region of Halton, all Halton Public Libraries, Sheridan College and Charles Sturt University.
  • Saturday conference begins with a keynote address followed by 3 sessions of 75 minute workshops. The conference also includes a large exhibit of educational and trade publishers. Lunch, coffee and tea breaks are included.
  • Registration Fee: $45.00, Seniors and Students: $35.00
  • In the past the Conference has financially supported the following community literacy initiatives:
    • EvenStart: A month long summer program developed to assist children who have not had the benefit of preschool experience
    • Cozy Reading: A volunteer lead reading program for children attending JK and SK. Cozy Reading includes literacy information and community information to assist parents in their role as their child’s first teacher.
    • Celebrating Stories A Family Festival: An annual Festival which is dedicated to encouraging family literacy and showcasing the work of Canadian authors, illustrators and storytellers.
  • Past Keynote Speakers have included: Kevin Sylvester, Mr. Jim Grieve, Dr. Janette Pelletier, Dr. Jean Clinton, Kathy Stinson, Jean Little, David Booth, Paul Kropp, Dr. Charles Pascal and Miriam Trehearne.
